“I’m hugely grateful for the award in recognition of the effort I’ve put into my Apprenticeship with STEGTA. I would urge anyone undertaking a training programme there to give maximum effort because you’ll only take out what you put into the course.

I first decided to get into engineering purely because I found it interesting and didn’t think I’d turn it into a career. I started by joining a college local to me to complete a Level 3 General Engineering qualification where I managed to achieve D*D*, despite COVID cutting my in person teaching time in half. Once completed, I decided it would probably be good to at least try my hand at a career in engineering. The company I now work for, Johnson Controls, had multiple openings for design engineers at the time and the job descriptions piqued my interest. About 6 months after applying for the job on Indeed, I got my job offer for a position in the Major Projects Department of the Fire Protection side of the company which is usually referred to as Tyco.

The job was hard to get used to at first as I didn’t have any experience working within an office environment or done any form of design work asides from maybe 15 hours of CAD on my Level 3. However, with help from my colleagues and manager I soon got to grips with the software and started to understand the role more and more as the weeks passed. One year on and I love being with my team and learning from the more experienced members. I’ve managed to undertake some small pieces of design work so far, things such as small warehouses and office blocks where I can learn my craft and take my time learning how to create the best designs I can.

The staff at STEGTA, especially Helen, have been excellent. Supportive, upbeat, experienced, and immensely helpful every step of the way. It gave me a sense of comfort as I knew that if I struggled anywhere along the way they’d be there to lend a hand.

I have just started a HNC in Mechanical Engineering at Trafford college alongside my Level 3 Apprenticeship and hope to eventually  progress onto a HND and then potentially even a Degree in a mechanical engineering discipline.”
