Colin Campbell – STEGTA Excellence Award Winner 2022

We would like to Congratulate Colin Campbell who has been awarded a STEGTA Excellence Award for Outstanding Performance in Civil Engineering.

We asked Colin why he chose Civil Engineering as a career and his future plans:

(Colin is pictured with his STEGTA Training Officer Martin Dawson).

“A career in Civil Engineering has always been something I have aspired to ever since high school when I found that Physics and Maths were my favourite subjects. Civil Engineering allows me to take my passion for both subjects and use them in a way that can shape the world around me and provide positive change to the communities impacted by the projects I get to work on.

I enjoy the satisfaction I get from my role when designs I have had a hand in producing are put into practice and the finished result is there to see. Having worked on flood alleviation schemes it was very energising to see the structures retaining water and hearing from the local community about the positive impact our work had on their quality of life.

I enjoy that my role challenges me and pushes me outside of my comfort zone from time to time as this enables me to grow and learn regularly. Being able to work collaboratively with many people of varied experience and knowledge on many different topics and types of projects means that I am constantly encountering new ideas and ways of working. These experiences help me to improve my own work and knowledge within my field.

The support I had from Martin Dawson, my STEGTA training officer, was very helpful through my time as an apprentice. He helped to show me how the day-to-day tasks I was performing translated to the necessary skills, knowledge and behaviours that were necessary for me to demonstrate, this was invaluable as it wasn’t always clear to me.

Following on from completing the Level 3 Civil Engineering Technician Standard, I have now started a 5 year Level 6 Degree Apprenticeship in Civil Engineering which I am doing at Northumbria University. I’m aiming to achieve Incorporated Engineer status in the future and continuing my path to becoming a Civil Engineer.”
