Libby Curran – STEGTA Excellence Award Winner 2022

We would like to Congratulate Libby Curran who is employed by Atkins in Warrington, as she has been awarded a STEGTA Excellence Award for Outstanding Performance in Civil Engineering.

We asked Libby why she chose Civil Engineering as a career and her future plans:

‘I chose engineering as I was always motivated to work practically and had an interest in the way things were designed, built and improved. Because of this, civil engineering was the most versatile option I could study. Becoming a civil engineer will allow me to explore more paths if I ever want to go beyond my current field. From a young age, I have been passionate about STEM and am now also a STEM ambassador after receiving guidance from my colleagues to apply.

At work, no two projects are the same (although they have similarities) which makes working on a range of projects more interesting. I am quite proud of my participation within these projects as I have been more independent in the workforce and am able to take on board projects with minimal help from others.

Sara being my STEGTA Training Officer was a huge help towards my Level 3 Civil Engineering Technician Apprenticeship Standard. If I had any questions, she was always there and we worked systematically to ensure the Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours were completed with little to no stress. Especially coming up to the end of the Apprenticeship and applying for the End Point Assessment, I found that Sara would work tirelessly to get the learners the answers they needed or if they were running behind, she would help to keep them on track. I’m preparing for my End Point Assessment in the most beneficial way for me. I have now submitted my written report section of the EPA and am focusing on completing the presentation and interview. In order to be the most prepared I can be, Sara and I have devised that mock interviews are heavily recommended so that I am comfortable within the environment prior to actually going through EPA.

After my Level 3, I plan to move onto a Level 6 Degree Apprenticeship in Civil Engineering. University is therefore the next step of which I am looking forward to completing; it is a 5-year course and I aim to make the most of it, just as I have done at Level 3.

Thank you for my Excellence Award  – I am still rather pleased that I have been awarded this. It was unexpected but a pleasant surprise!’
