STEGTA EXCELLENCE AWARD – Frank Roberts

We would like to Congratulate Frank Roberts who is employed by AECOM in York, as he has been awarded the STEGTA Excellence Award for Outstanding Performance in Rail Engineering Design.

We asked Frank how he felt about winning the award:

“To have the STEGTA Excellence Award presented to me is a great honour of which I am greatly appreciative to all those within STEGTA and AECOM who have invested so much time and effort into building my skill sets from scratch to where they are today. I see myself in great debt to the AECOM York Electrification & Power Team as well as my training officer Hugh Mclay who have been greatly supportive, patient and inspiring allowing me to gain independence and confidence within the rail design engineering sector.

The diversity of skills I have captured have allowed me to produce design on multi-million pound projects such as Waterloo Station Enhancements, High speed 2 Enabling Works and London North West Signalling Power Renewals. Each submission has made me feel a sense of achievement that no purely academic route into engineering can offer, as my design work is having a direct impact on improving the rail infrastructure throughout the United Kingdom.

As I leave my position at STEGTA, I am progressing into my Electrical Engineering Degree, alongside AECOM, to gain a deeper understanding of the discipline I work within. I cannot thank those enough who have reinforced the beginning of my engineering career and I maintain highly optimistic for what my future holds in the industry.

Thank you STEGTA & AECOM!”

Frank’s Training Officer Hugh McLay said “I originally met Frank in 2015 at the National Training Academy for Rail in Northampton as part of the residential course and since that day I have been impressed by his maturity and professionalism. During his Apprenticeship, Frank has been enthusiastic, keen to learn new skills and he has shown determination and drive to finish his Level 3 qualification early and move onto further study at Wakefield University. He has also progressed to be a role model and Mentor within his Company building on his own experience. It has been a pleasure to be his Training Officer, well done Frank!”

Franks Head of Discipline Gary Hicks said “I have met Frank on a number of occasions and part of local team meetings in York. He is regarded as a valued member of the team and not as a trainee.

This is reflected in the technical advances and understanding Frank has within the E&P discipline and I am looking forward to being able to provide him and the team with more diverse and challenging projects in the future. Many Congratulations Frank.”
