Conor Mills – Case Study

Employer: Mettler Toledo Safeline
Job Title: Electrical Fitter Apprentice
Apprenticeship: Level 3 Engineering Fitter Standard

Why did you decide to follow the route of an Apprenticeship?
I developed a passion for Engineering when I was in high school. We did a variety of technology subjects but Electronics was always the one I enjoyed the most. On top of that, my Dad is an electrician by trade so it’s something that has always been in my family. When I had to pick my GCSE options, I had no second thoughts about choosing Electronics as one of them. It was during those years that I decided to follow the Apprenticeship route. I felt an Apprenticeship suited my style of learning better than a more academic path and this would be more helpful for my development.

What does a typical day at work involve for you?
My working day depends on which department I am on at the time. As I have not finished my Apprenticeship yet, I am still moving from area to area to learn each section and to get an understanding of the whole process of making a Metal Detector.

What do you enjoy most about your job?
I have enjoyed most of the work that I have done so far. I like the constant need to learn and develop that comes with each new area that I move into. Each area requires different skills and techniques so it is nice to change every few weeks or so, as it stops the days becoming repetitive and it allows me to obtain a wide range of skills. Another aspect of my job that I enjoy is working with lots of different people. Not only am I able to learn from their vast experiences of the job but it also means I can develop relationships with people from all over the company.

How did your STEGTA Training Officer and Employer support you throughout your Apprenticeship?
Both my mentor within Mettler Toledo and my STEGTA Training Officer regularly check up on my progress and they are both available for a chat either in person or over the phone if I need them.

How has your role developed since starting with your employer?
The first department I was put in was Stores, which is where all the parts and components are kept. Within stores, there are numerous different jobs that need to be done on a daily basis. Kanban’s need to be kept full, kits need to be assembled, deliveries put into the correct locations and much more. I was there for a few months before moving to the Electronics area. Within this area I have learnt how to build power supplies, modules, enclosures and I/O boxes. The last area I have been in is Head Build. This is where the larger aspects of the detector’s case are put together.

Do you hope to progress to any further training/higher education?
As part of my Apprenticeship, I am currently doing my level 2 practical skills units at the STEGTA training centre alongside studying a HNC in Electrical/Electronic Engineering at Trafford College. I would like to do as much training as possible that will help me to improve as an engineer and I am open to doing a HND once I have completed my HNC.

What do you enjoy doing outside work?
Outside of work I enjoy spending time with my friends, family and partner. I play for a Sunday league football team as well as coach a team too. I try to go to the gym as regularly as possible and I am a massive fan of live music gigs.
