Isaac Khan – Case Study

Age: 23
Company: Carnaud Metalbox Engineering Ltd.
Apprenticeship: Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship in Mechanical Manufacturing Engineering

What do you enjoy most about your work?
Accomplishing tasks and overcoming problems is satisfying as an engineer. Being able to work alongside engineers who are more experienced than me helps me to learn as we tackle different problems every day.

What project(s) are you working on at the moment?
As part of my HND, I am currently designing a system which allows us to track parts within the company to help with assets management and production efficiency.

What does a typical day at work involve?
Each day at work is different. The tasks I carry out depend on the stage of the machine build I am working on. For context, at Carnaud Metalbox we produce high speed metal forming machinery for the production of beverage cans, these machines are bespoke to the customer specification and require a range of applications in order to assemble them.

What do you see as the biggest challenges in your job?
The biggest challenge is ensuring that my work is at the high standard required every day. Every machine we send to the customer is a representation of our company and we need to ensure that they are happy with the level of quality and service that they receive.

What encouraged you to do an Apprenticeship?
Engineering is something I was always interested in studying. Instead of doing it at university, I decided that an apprenticeship was a more interesting style of learning which allows you to gain experience as well as get your qualifications.

What did you do prior to your Apprenticeship?
Before starting my apprenticeship, I completed my GCSE’s then studied Biology, Chemistry and Physics at A level.

What are the benefits?
The benefits are being paid whilst earning qualifications. Rather than having student debt or having a job where you aren’t gaining qualifications and progressing, an apprenticeship allows you to earn, study and gain experience.

Are you doing any further studies?
I’m currently studying my HND after spending 2 years completing my HNC.

What are your future plans?
My plan is to continue learning the products which my company produce. Once I have enough product knowledge, I would like to become a service engineer where I would visit sites around the world, interact with customers and ensure their machines are maintained to our required standard.

What do you enjoy doing outside work?
I enjoy playing rugby, golf and socialising with friends at weekend.
