Yusra Faki – Case Study

Age: 22
Company: Arup
Apprenticeship: Level 3 Civil Engineering Technician Apprenticeship Standard

What do you enjoy most about your work?
I really enjoy being able to learn how to use a range of software for drawing and modelling and getting to work with experienced professionals, who are all really supportive.

What project(s) are you working on at the moment?
I have recently been working on a residential project and spent a lot of time developing and editing vertical, horizontal and plan details with the use of AutoCAD, for stage 4 of the project.

What does a typical day at work involve?
Each day is different and depends on what project I am working on, but typical work includes: helping with preparing sketchbooks, editing/developing CAD details for façade drawings, developing models in Rhino3D, creating anecdotes for the façade’s online glossary on Inkscape and working towards Arup’s wider initiatives; equality, diversity and inclusion.

What do you see as the biggest challenges in your job?
Being able to manage my time effectively between work, studies and my free time so that I can work towards completing deadlines and achieving goals.

What encouraged you to do an Apprenticeship?
I have always been a practical, hands-on learner. I wasn’t sure that I wanted to go to university and hadn’t really considered all the other options available. After my A-levels, I took a gap year, did some work experience and had a part-time job for a few months. All the while, I still knew that I wanted to continue with my education and thought an Apprenticeship was a great solution to learn whilst earning. It took a while, but I managed to secure an Apprenticeship at Arup last year.

What did you do prior to your Apprenticeship?
Prior to my Apprenticeship, I completed my A-Levels. I studied Psychology, English Literature and Product Design. I was always interested in design, the way things work and how they are put together. However, what I didn’t know is what I wanted to study further and whether I was going to go to University or not. I applied to many other apprenticeships before I found this one. At first, I found the process difficult but then realised I had to step out of my comfort zone and be more active in the search to achieve my goals. I learnt that people are always there to help as long as you are willing to ask.

What are the benefits?

  • Being able to work with a variety of people with a wide range of expertise, who support you along the way.
  • Getting to work on a range of big projects.
  • Learning how to use different software packages.

What are your future plans?
I am yet to decide, although after having completed my Level 3, I am considering the option of a Level 6 Apprenticeship.

What do you enjoy doing outside work?

  • Reading
  • Sports (I have recently been into skateboarding)
  • Travelling (going on hikes)
  • Baking
