We would like to Congratulate Kirsty Smith who is employed by Atkins in Trowbridge, as she has been awarded a STEGTA Excellence Award for Outstanding Performance in Civil Engineering.

We asked Kirsty why she chose Civil Engineering as a career and her future plans:

“Thank you to STEGTA and Atkins for all of their support in completing the Level 3 Civil Engineering Technician Apprenticeship Standard. I am honoured to have been presented with this award. My STEGTA Training Officer, Ged Phillips, was a crucial part of enabling me to complete my Apprenticeship, providing knowledge and assistance throughout the programme. Atkins have been really supportive in allowing me to get involved in lots of different aspects of projects and therefore enabling me to complete all of the requirements for the apprenticeship and End Point Assessment.

I chose a career in Civil Engineering for multiple reasons; the wide range of sectors to work in, I would be making a difference to the world and people’s lives and the creativity involved.

What I enjoy most about my role is that no day is the same; whether that be out in the field and on site, or working from an office. There are also lots of opportunities to get involved in different projects.

I am currently a Civil Engineering Technician working in Transportation and in October 2021, I began my studies for the Level 6 Civil Engineering Degree Apprenticeship, based at the University of the West of England (UWE). Alongside this, I am progressing with the ICE’s online Initial Professional Development (IPD) initiative, which together with the Bachelor’s degree will enable me to sit the end-point Incorporated Engineer (IEng) assessment with the ICE. My long term goal will be to sit my Chartered Engineer (CEng) assessment with the ICE and continue to make a difference.”
